Barbara LT is a visual artist and paints predominantly circus artists.
She spends most of her days painting movement, the character of her favourite circus artists from around the world. Finding beauty in all circus disciplines she is currently focusing on movement in the air, catching that moment that separates flying from falling.
She finds inspiration in new circus artists as well as her long term muses, loves having them around for a chat in her studio and is avidly learning the circus vocabulary.
Barbara runs away with the circus as often as she can, but always returns to her home in Kew Gardens, London.
This piece comes from exploration of ideas of time, connections and memories to circus and acrobats. The works are created using images of flowers matching them with the perfection and strength of an acrobat.
The process starts on a quiet sunny morning in the rose garden of Royal Botanical Gardens Kew in London and then browsing my collection of photos and video of acrobats. When I find something that sparks my interest and two images “fit”, I layer the images adding digital painting elements.
When the image is complete it is printed on Awagami Japanese artist paper from Shikoku island Japan.
Once the archival artist print is dry, I transfer the image and a layer of the paper onto an Italian wooden gesso board. The top layer of the paper is then gently rubbed off with my fingertips making each artwork unique. These multilayered transfers appear crumbly speaking of passing of time and memories of magic and happiness.

“It is not the perfection of their movement that moves me, it’s that moment when the protection of perfection goes away, when it’s just them. When they are just human. In the shows you sometimes catch this in a little smile or a gentle touch between friends on stage. That is where the magic of circus is for me, in the beautiful human inside the dreamy performer.”
“One of the best things about painting circus is that you often get to spend the backstage pre performance time with the acrobats. And they are such lovely people. One of my favourite companies is the Australian Gravity and Other Myths, they always make me feel like I am a part of their circus family, they have the sharpest humour and their shows are always intimate and groundbreaking.”
